Spencer, John
(1630–93)
   Hebraist and Theologian.
   Spencer was born in Kent and was educated at the University of Cambridge. He is remembered for his De Legibus Hebraeorum in which he pointed out the similarities between the traditions of the Jews and those of their semitic neighbours. His work made little impression at the time (though it caused some to question his orthodoxy), but it was used by wellhausen and the theologians of the Tübingen school. Today Spencer is regarded as an important pioneer in the study of comparative religion.
